Orlando Car Service With Car Seats: A Parent’s Guide
Author Mary Babel
Picture it: your flight just landed at Orlando International Airport (MCO), your toddler is tired, you’re juggling a stroller and three bags, and now you need a ride that has a car seat. This is where a lot of family trips get stressful.
Here’s the short version. Florida law requires a car seat or booster for children 5 and younger. Mears Connect doesn’t offer car seats. Uber and Lyft have limited options. A private car service can have the right seat installed before you even land. With Orlando Superior Transportation, car seats and booster seats are free.
Let’s walk through the details so you can pick the right ride.
What Does Florida Law Say About Car Seats?
Florida’s rule is in Statute 316.613. It says:
- Ages 0 to 3: a separate car seat or a seat built into the vehicle
- Ages 4 and 5: a car seat, a built-in child seat, or a booster
- Age 6 and older: a regular seat belt is allowed by law
That’s the legal minimum, and safety experts go further. Many recommend keeping kids in a booster until a seat belt fits them properly, which is usually around 4 feet 9 inches tall, somewhere between ages 8 and 12.
You may read online that taxis, limos or rideshare vehicles are exempt. Sources disagree about how that works, and it doesn’t change the safest answer: if your child needs a seat, use one. (This is general information, not legal advice.)
Which Seat Does Your Child Need?
Always follow the limits printed on your seat. As a general guide:
- Babies and young toddlers (newborn to 2 and beyond): a rear-facing infant or convertible seat
- Toddlers and preschoolers (roughly 2 to 5): a forward-facing seat with a harness
- Bigger kids (about 5 up to 8 to 12): a booster seat until the seat belt fits
Your Car Seat Options at MCO
- Bring your own: You know it fits your child. The downsides are that it’s bulky and airlines can lose or damage it.
- Mears Connect: Car seats aren’t offered, but you can use your own. The vehicle can be a coach, van or smaller car, so you won’t always know what you’ll get.
- Uber / Lyft: Car seat options have been offered in Orlando for a small extra fee. It’s usually one forward-facing seat, not for babies, and availability is limited.
- Minnie Van: Two free car seats per van. It’s built for rides inside Disney World.
- Rental car: You rent or bring a seat, and you install it yourself after a long flight.
- Private car service: The seat is installed before pickup. It needs to be booked ahead.
Mears Connect says it doesn’t provide car seats with its service. If you bring your own, you may not know ahead of time whether you’ll ride in a big coach or a smaller van, which makes planning harder.
Uber and Lyft have offered car seat modes in Orlando, but the seat is usually a single forward-facing one for kids around age 2 and up. Check the app, since availability changes.
Minnie Vans come with two car seats and are handy once you’re at Disney. They’re mostly for trips around the property, so check with Disney if you want one from the airport.
Why Parents Pick a Private Car
- No lugging a seat through the airport. It’s already in the car when you arrive.
- It’s installed before you land. You’re not wrestling with straps next to a busy curb.
- Your driver tracks your flight. If you land late, they’re still there.
- Room for the stroller and bags. No guessing whether it all fits.
- One price for the whole vehicle, not a fee per person.
What to Tell the Company When You Book
A little detail up front makes the pickup smooth:
- Each child’s age, weight and height
- How many seats you need
- Whether any child needs a rear-facing infant seat or a booster
- How many bags and strollers you’re bringing
- Your flight number
Pick the right vehicle size. Fitting three car seats across the back seat of a sedan rarely works. If you have three or more kids in seats, ask for an SUV or a van.
When you meet your driver, take a minute to check the fit. The harness should sit snug on your child. Even when the seat is installed for you, the final check belongs to you.
Questions to Ask Any Car Service
- Are car seats free, or charged per seat?
- Which types do you have: infant, convertible, booster?
- Are they installed before pickup?
- Are they cleaned between rides?
- Does the vehicle I’m booking fit all our seats and bags?
